There are essentially three main “parts” of the municipality of Manilva: the main town of Manilva, San Luis de Sabinillas village, and Castillo de la Duquesa village. Smaller communities include Puerto Duquesa and Punta de la Chullera.
Sabinillas is the village that is closest to the N-340 highway. Visitors to Manilva will definitely pass through this village on their way to other points of the town. Sabinillas is a fishing village that has seen a lot of developments in recent years. In past times, it used to be a quiet little village that was unconcerned with things like tourists and aesthetics. Today however, Sabinillas can be said to be blooming quite nicely. In fact, modern day Sabinillas holds very little resemblance to the Sabinillas of old.
The village of Castillo lies on the coast, right in the middle of what used to be an ancient Roman fishing village. Excavations have unearthed much of the previous infrastructure. Old Roman bath houses have been uncovered, much of their internal structure intact. To the west of the main bath house structure, remnants of a Roman villa have been found. And very recently, a Roman cemetery was discovered. There seems to be more hidden treasures of history waiting to be discovered here, and Castillo certainly has the potential to become a center of historical research and a prime historic attraction.
Punta de la Chullera is a smaller location still within the Manilva municipality. It is a combination of farmland and coastline, and is a popular place for weekend vacationers looking for quieter beaches. From Punta Chullera, one can see the Rock of Gibraltar, a very spectacular view indeed.
Near Punta Chullera is Puerto de la Duquesa, which is more of a recreational port with a world class 18 hole golf course. It has an excellent sport marina, promenades, a selection of restaurants and bars, and miles and miles of gorgeous beaches. Puerto de la Duquesa is said to be the Costa del Sol’s real secret attraction.
